2021/22 Regional District Lions Service Project

What a wonderful service project to work collaboratively with a group of organisations dedicated to improving the health of our regional area.

A grant of $45,000 from The Male Bag Foundation will facilitate the purchase of a leading-edge prostate cancer biopsy machine for South Australia’s Flinders and Upper North Local Health Network. The transperineal biopsy machine will be based at Port Augusta. The balance of the machine’s cost will be assisted by funds raised by the Port Augusta Lions Club and the Whyalla Prostate Support Group.

Foundation Patron David Parkin OAM said:

“On the Foundation’s behalf, I want to acknowledge the Health Network’s leadership team, Port Augusta Lions and the Whyalla Prostate Cancer Support Group for partnering in this significant health initiative. We know this will be a game changer for men’s health, and we look forward to working together to achieve this mission”.

Health Network CEO Craig Packard

“…also thanked Port Augusta Lions who saw the unique health value of the project and immediately stepped up to raise funding for the Health Network. The Network and Lions are now in regular contact with the Foundation, and I am confident our shared mission will be delivered on time and have lasting benefits for our community”.

Lions Challenge to raise $45,000

The unit is expected to be commissioned by June 2022 and will ensure that public patients across the Health Network will have the same level of service that is available in Adelaide.

David Parkin OAM said:

“Prostate cancer remains the largest cause of death among blokes, with survivorship in regional communities being well below the national average. Early detection, local diagnosis and treatment is a game changer for men and the people who love them”.

The district has a number of Lions clubs that are within the surrounding areas that could well be accessing this unit.

District Lions Clubs include: Boolaroo Centre & District, Cowell, Jamestown, Kimba, Orroroo & District, Port Pirie, Port Augusta, Peterborough & District, Quorn, Rocky River, Whyalla, Whyalla Mount Laura, and Wudinna.
